Cadets at 2248 (Rutland) Squadron are gaining hands-on experience in robotics and engineering thanks to an £8,000 grant from the Air Cadet Charity.
The funding enabled the Squadron to purchase 15 VEX IQ robotics kits at the end of April, providing cadets with the opportunity to explore robotics, engineering design and problem-solving through practical activities.

Since receiving the kits, cadets have thrown themselves into the project, building their first robots and experimenting with a range of attachments. The programme has already generated significant enthusiasm, with cadets quickly developing their skills and confidence as they learn how different mechanical and electronic components work together.
"We have had a great few weeks getting familiarised with the robotics kits and the cadets are really engaging with the project. We have started building basic robots and then adding claws, crane arms and sensors. Over the next few weeks we will introduce coding and more complex builds as we develop a syllabus for roll out across the Wing."
Flight Lieutenant Holness, Officer Commanding 2248 (Rutland) Squadron
The next phase of the project will introduce coding and more advanced robotic builds, allowing cadets to further develop their STEM knowledge and technical abilities. The Squadron is also creating a structured robotics syllabus, which is expected to be rolled out across South and East Midlands Wing later this year, extending the benefits of the project to 31 squadrons and over 3,000 cadets.

The initiative demonstrates how charitable funding can help bring STEM subjects to life, providing young people with valuable experiences that complement their education and help develop skills for the future.
"Many thanks to the Air Cadet Charity for the grant. It will go a long way towards inspiring an enthusiasm for robotic engineering in our cadets and helping to develop the skilled engineers of the future."
Flight Lieutenant Holness, Officer Commanding 2248 (Rutland) Squadron

The Air Cadet Charity is proud to support projects that inspire curiosity, creativity and ambition, helping cadets develop practical skills and explore future career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Current Grant Opportunities
Applications are currently open for a number of Air Cadet Charity grant programmes designed to support cadet development and enhance squadron activities across the RAF Air Cadets.
Current application programmes:
Adventure Training Equipment Grant: open until 5th July
General Grants: open until 24th July
