South & East Midlands Wing deliver adventure across the region

Today, in National Cadets Week, we're recognising the dedicated volunteers throughout RAF Air Cadets whose time, commitment and expertise create opportunities for cadets across the country.

A fantastic example can be found in South & East Midlands Wing, where dedicated volunteers have transformed charitable funding into life-changing opportunities for cadets. After successfully securing an Air Cadet Charity Grant in 2025, volunteers purchased a fleet of 12 Specialized Rockhopper mountain bikes, complete with helmets, gloves and goggles. They have since managed the storage, maintenance and transportation of the equipment, coordinated activities across the region, and delivered training and expeditions that have enabled dozens of cadets to develop new skills, build confidence and enjoy adventure training on two wheels.

The 2026 journey began in February when 1875 (Towcester) Squadron used the bikes for a one-day trail riding event. During Easter, the fleet headed to Sherwood Pines, supporting activities for cadets from 384 (Mansfield), 2418 (Sherwood), 1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre) and 1359 (Beeston) Squadrons, adding an exciting dimension to their Easter Camp programme. Through the summer, the bikes were a key feature of the Wing Adventure Training Camp at Inskip Cadet Centre, before most recently supporting cadets attending the South & East Midlands Sector 4 Multi-Activity Camp at Yardley Chase Cadet Centre.

The impact has been significant. So far this year, the bikes have played a vital role in enabling 98 cadets to achieve their MIAS "1st Gear" award, an outstanding achievement that demonstrates the value of accessible and engaging adventure training opportunities.

The benefits extend beyond cadet activities. The bikes have also been deployed on Camp Viking and have supported CFAVs in gaining mountain biking qualifications, helping to strengthen and expand the Wing's Adventure Training capability for the future.

"These mountain bikes have proven to be a truly valuable asset, enriching the experience of cadets and volunteers alike across South & East Midlands Wing and beyond. A fantastic example of how charitable funding can create lasting opportunities, develop skills and inspire adventure."
‍Mr Duncan Teago, South & East Midlands Wing

This is a fantastic example of how volunteers turn charitable funding into real experiences for young people. Their commitment has enabled almost 100 cadets to gain new skills, build confidence and enjoy adventure training in a safe and supportive environment. Whether organising camps, gaining additional qualifications to expand activity provision, or giving up weekends to support cadets, volunteers continue to create opportunities that would not exist without them.

This success story is not simply about mountain bikes. It's about the volunteers who give their time, energy and expertise to create opportunities for cadets, ensuring charitable funding delivers the greatest possible impact for young people across South & East Midlands Wing.
