The Air Cadet Charity joined more than 700 cadets, adult volunteers and civilian committee members at the South and East Midlands Wing Field Day at RAF Wittering on Sunday 19 April, for a packed day showcasing competition, teamwork and development across the cadet experience.
Across more than 30 squadrons, cadets took part in a full programme of activities, from drill and ceremonial to archery and laser clay pigeon shooting. The day highlighted the scale of participation across the Wing and the enthusiasm of cadets taking on a wide range of challenges.
Alongside the main events, the Air Cadet Charity delivered its own STEM challenge, which quickly became a focal point for cadets throughout the day. Competition was fierce, with 1359 (Beeston) Squadron setting the fastest time of the day at 16.41 seconds. Their effort earned them a box of chocolates to share, along with an Air Cadet Charity flag.
The Charity also had the opportunity to see first-hand the impact of recent funding. A grant provided last year enabled the Wing to purchase mountain bikes and associated equipment, which are now being used by cadets to work towards mountain biking “gears” qualifications. Several squadrons are now planning expedition and adventure training activities built around this new kit.
Cadets from 1875 (Towcester) Squadron were among those benefiting directly from the equipment, demonstrating how targeted funding is expanding opportunities on the ground.
“Days like this are where the impact of our work really comes to life. Speaking directly with cadets and volunteers shows us exactly where funding is making a difference, and where we need to further break down financial barriers and open up opportunity across the cadet experience.”
Jess Gilbert, Charity Director
Events like this are key opportunities for the Charity to understand needs at squadron level and demonstrate how funding can directly improve access, skills and experiences for cadets across the UK.
With both the General Grant and Air Cadet Development Scheme windows currently open for applications until 24 July 2026, the timing of the event enabled us to provide a reminder of the opportunities available to squadrons seeking support.
Overall, the day reinforced a simple point: when funding is placed in the right areas, it has a visible and meaningful impact on cadets, volunteers and the wider cadet experience.
